Welcome to Char’s Fund first Newsletter

The “Charlotte Jones Memorial Tsunami Fund” is now officially registered as a charity and is also known as “Char’s Fund”. The fund has come a long way since it was set-up and we have now raised over £34,000, which is way beyond our expectations so thank you all for your generous donations. Our eventual goal is to raise well over £50,000. Please keep helping us to get there. Thank you.

The 10 children which Char’s Fund will be supporting have also recently been announced.

Char’s Fund is supporting 10 long-term educational scholarships through Muang Phuket School, Phuket Town, Thailand. The school is co-educational with 1800 pupils ranging from 6 to 16 years of age. The scheme was announced at their Children’s Day on 13th January 2006 and from a list of over 200 very poor and needy pupils, a teacher’s committee at the school chose 10 children who are now each re ceiving around £30/ 2000 baht every month throughout the year to help them with school uniforms, shoes, books, transport, school fees, etc. This will also allow the school to support other very needy children from its own funds. This support will be up to 10 years for each child with the hope that most of these children will also progress onwards through college/university in Thailand. As can be seen below, three of the children have already progressed down this road.

Onion Fest
The second Onion Fest was held in July this year. Bigger and better than last year and is now turning out to be an
annual music festival and wholly organised by Char’s Petersfield friends. The Onion Fest helped raise £4500 towards Char’s Fund this year and we would like to thank all who helped make it a success.

BBC film
The BBC have produced a drama-documentary about the Tsunami to be screened on BBC2 on November 28th and December 5th. The two part drama, written by award winning Abi Morgan, is set mostly in Phuket and Khao Lak.
It is inspired by true accounts and research but focuses on a group of fictional characters whose lives are transformed by the events of that time. The film examines the way people from all over the world came together in the aftermath of a disaster of such extraordinary magnitude, to cope with their losses and try to help one another rebuild their lives.

Website
We are now devoting our attention to building a website for Char’s Fund – it is still under construction at the moment but are hoping to have all the information uploaded before too long. We will keep all informed with our progress and news through regular newsletters. Once again thank you for your help and support towards this very special cause.
